Myths and Legends

You'll always find with any subject, there are conspiracy theories and myths surrounding why things happened and projects were undertaken in the way they were.

Yet, there are even stories that relate to the country's roads! This page has been created to show these urban legends, as they are often rather interesting!

If you know of a story, no matter how silly it sounds, please get in touch with the site and we'll get it listed on this page!

Note: These Urban Myths are only conspiracy theories, included here as a bit of fun. They are NOT the real reason why particular roads were built.

M11 Junction 5
This particular junction was built as a limited access interchange with south-facing slip roads. Conspiracists reckon that no north-facing slip roads were built to make it harder for getaway drivers to escape northwards in the event of the nearby Bank of England printing factory being robbed.

M62 Junction 22-23
Th
e well known Stott Hall Farm straddles the centre of the motorway. A myth dictates that the motorway splits as the owners of the farm refused to sell up. The true reason is due to the geology of the land in the area, meaning the motorway could not be built in the normal way due to potential engineering problems.

M1, Northern Ireland
One story is that the road was constructed straight so that "they could be used as runways in the event of a nuclear war"
