About Road to Nowhere

This page is here to give a little insight into the site.

So what is Road to Nowhere?
Road to Nowhere is a website that is dedicated to providing the public into an insight of the United Kingdom's road network, taking a peek principally at trunk roads and primary routes, as well as a look at other road-related topics and features.

The website was established in September 2006, its conception being down to the discovery of a non-motorway niche in the roads website network. From there it has developed to include toll prices and Euroroutes, amongst other things. It was after taking a look around the internet to see it there were any other websites on the topic - and stumbling across a number of websites (out went the motorways!!), plus an online community dedicated to road-lovers everywhere.

What's the point?
Well, its to provide a reference guide and to inform and educate people. There are those who have an interest in roads, there are those who want to find something out. And there are regular visitors, not just from the UK, but (after having a look) also from Norway, France, Spain, Italy Hong Kong, Thailand and the USA! The site has been described as "the fastest growing roads-related website." It has also recently become the largest roads-related site on the internet, with some 750 pages on the subject - and it's still growing!

The site has also been used by magazines and television production companies to help with research on roads topics!

Where did the name come from?
After umming and arring over a name, I suddenly ended up with a certain song in my head. So it stuck!

How often is the site updated?
Not as often as the author would like. Generally, the aim is for updates to be carried out twice a month, although that can be thrown out of the window if family commitments (and computer problems) occur. It is hoped that a more regular update, possibly even weekly, can be made once a steady routine can be established.

So who's the author?
Road to Nowhere is written by a 24 year-old chap called Nicholas, who currently lives in Hindley, near Wigan. Nicholas works for a furniture company based in Wigan, liasing with customers to arrange deliveries of their goods. In addition, he helps out on a voluntary basis for the Greater Manchester Museum of Transport.

Nicholas has grown up interested in roads since he was little, having started when he was about four years old, often found doodling roads, and even made-up maps! It didn't help that his grandparents used to supply him with an annual intake of maps and atlases! He can drive too, having passed on his first attempt (despite forgetting to cancel the indicator at one point!).

And yes, Nicholas doesn have a life away from roads and thie website. He is married to Rachelle, and has been for over two years now - although we've been together for four years. And yes, she doesn't mind talking about roads, as she finds it useful theory practise for when she starts to learn to drive. The two also have a little daughter, Rhiannon, who was born back in October. And she certainly is starting to grow quickly!

If the site is on roads, where are the motorways?
Due to comprehensive motorway coverage elsewhere, Road to Nowhere generally doesn't look at motorways - although some references are made to them where necessary, or to provide a fuller picture.

For motorway hunters, Chris Marshall's long running CBRD site is the best place to start. This fantastic site has a lot of in depth coverage on the motorway network, and also includes a number of sections on old roads and other features that are not included on this site.

It was decided that two competing sites looking at the same thing was sipmly unncessary, so the decision was made to create this site to run alongside CBRD. And we do help each other out!

Also, Steven Jukes has a brilliant site called Pathetic Motorways, which looks at those motorways that just don't seem to look right. Find out more about cancelled, incomplete and inadequate motorways, as well as those which just shouldn't exist!!

Will you be going international?
Maybe! I'm lookiong at some possibilities, nothing has been set in stone yet.
