A5225: Wigan Gateway The Wigan Gateway was a proposed road project that would have dissected across the Wigan Borough area. The new highway would have run between the M6 Junction 26 and the A579 between Leigh and Atherton. The proposal for the route was originally established in the Lancashire County Council's "Road Plan for Lancashire", as an extension to the Route 215 (later becoming the M58 - see also the page on the A506 in "Old Roads"). The road was seen as necessary to the wider road network, and also to relieve Wigan of cross-town traffic. The route originally should have extended beyond the A579 and up to the M61. In fact, provision was made for this road in the form of the flared carriageways on the A58 at Westhoughton and also an underpass beneath the M61 just north of J5 (but this was never put to use). In 2002, the Highways Agency removed the project from its scheme list, and Wigan Council took over the proposal to a revised specification - removal of the A579 to M61 section and reduction of the Westwood to A579 section from dual to single carriageway. The plan was cancelled in February 2007, with the exception of a modified section between Marus Bridge and Westwood, which will form part of a new A49 bypass linked to the development of the Westwood Park site.
