A3: Hindhead Tunnel and By-pass

The A3 around Hindhead is the only section of the London to Portsmouth road that is not dual carriageway, with the new bypass and tunnel removing the only major bottleneck left on this road, at the signal-controlled junction where the road crosses the A287.

The scheme will involve a new 4 mile dual carriageway road, 1.1 miles of which will be immersed in a twin bored tunnel under the Devil's Punch Bowl, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Upon completion of the new road, the existing A3 through the Site will be removed, with the land converted to open heathland, to match the surrounding area.

Preparation work started in January 2007, with work on the new tunnel set to start in 2008. The road should be open to traffic in mid 2011.

More details can be found at the Highways Agency website.
