A556: Bowden to Tabley Dualling & Mere By-pass

There has long been an issue relating to this road. The A556 is the main signposted route from the M6 South to the M56 East, catering for traffic wanting to head into Manchester from the south of the country. It's a busy route, as there is no direct link from the M6 to the M56 at the Lymm Interchange (unless you double back via the dumbbell interchange and the A50).

The problem with the road is that it is a four-lane single carriageway with double white lines down the middle. It's a fast road, a 50mph speed limit being imposed in the past couple of years in an attempt to improve safety.

Originally the plan was to build a motorway by-pass to take the traffic away, the A556(M). However, that idea was deemed too environmentally unfriendly. Instead, the Highways Agency plan on dualling the A556 along this route, with an off-line section by-passing the Mere Crossroads. A map of the proposed exit plans is shown below.
