M4: New Magor to Castleton Motorway

The new section of M4 will be built to relieve the existing M4 around Newport. Currently, this part of the M4 suffers from major congestion due to the motorway only being two lanes wide in either direction due to the Brynglas Tunnels. It also has a lack of continuous hard shoulder, due to a lack of space.

The new M4 motorway will be built to a full, standard three lane motorway with continuous hard shoulders. It will be 15 miles long, its course taking it around the southern side of Newport.

Construction is proposed to start in 2010, with an aim for the motorway to be open during 2013. The New M4 may open as a Toll Motorway, similar to the M6 Toll, although this has not been confirmed yet, particularly due to the proximity of the Severn Bridges.

More details can be found at the scheme website.
