A506: The Regional Road

The problems possessed by the routing of the A577 through Upholland and Old Skelmersdale - being a twisty and steep road - meant the need for a by-pass around the area. In the "Road Plan for Lancashire" of 1949, Lancashire County Council published the proposal for "Route 215", a grade separated by-pass to the area, and the proposed Skelmersdale New Town. The original proposal did not take the proposed North-South route (the M6) into account, this was added on to provide a direct link to the motorway.

The Skelmersdale Relief Road was the first part of the proposed Aintree to Wigan Motorway, the A506 to be upgraded to full motorway status after the completion of the route to Aintree.

Further details on this road can be found on the Lancashire County Council website.
