A8000 A short single-carriageway road, the A8000 was built to carry traffic from the M9 up to the Forth Road Bridge. However, this road became woefully inadequate for the volumes of traffic that were to end up using it, resulting in frequent queues and congestion. The reason for this was simple - when the M9 and its spur opened in 1970, the B800 (as it was then) was simply renumbered to A8000. The Scottish Executive and Forth Road Transport Authority teamed up to fund a replacement road in the form of an extension of the M9 spur up to the A90 at South Queensferry, which opened in October 2007. The A8000 road itself was retained, but has now been downgraded back to its original B800 designation, whilst the roundabout at the southern end of the old A8000 has been closed and removed. This is a change to what was proposed in 1977, whereby it was suggested that the A8000 be widened to become a two-lane dual carriageway. However this plan was dropped in 1997 in favour of an off-line motorway extension.
