About the Road

A major radial from London, this route links the capital with the Suffolk coast via Ipswich. However, unlike its Norfolk counterpart the A11, this route is fully intact and is to a higher standard throughout.

However, despite being completely dualled between London and Ipswich, the quality of the road is much to be desired. In 2007, it was voted the worst road in Britain in a poll carried out by Churchill Insurance. It is also the first trunk road in the country to be the subject of a council public inquiry, as part of a move by Essex County Council to see improvements made to the road.

The road is also unusual in that the M25 to A14 section has junction numbers - this may be due to the road being a major freight route for foreign lorry drivers heading from the south east up to Felixstowe via the A14.
