A14 spur
including
A14(M) About the Road A spur road with an interesting history, the A14 spur provides a nifty little short-cut along with the A14(M) from the A14 east to the A1 north by cutting out Brampton Hut Interchange. The A14 spur was originally numbered... the A14! In fact, you could say this is the only part of the current A14 that retains its number from the old road. This all stems back to the time when the M1-A1 link road was being built. It was initially decided that this new road would be numbered the A604, in accordance with the rest of what is now the A14 to the east of Huntingdon. However, it was deemed that the road was too important to have a three digit number. So the existing A14 was renumbered A1198, except for the Huntingdon to Alconbury section - which became a spur of the A604. But when the new road was opened, the A604 and the new link were renumbered A14, including the spur! The A14(M) had the same problem. When the A1 was upgraded to become the A1(M), a short part of the spur had to be designated as motorway. This led to the creation of the very short-lived A604(M), which became referred to as the A14(M). However, what this road is officially called is somewhat a questionable point, as some documents refer to it still as A604(M), some as A14(M), and others as A1(M)! The problem is that there are no signs stating what it is, but it is generally referred to as the A14(M), as it leads straight onto the A14, and because the A604 is no more.
