A331

About the Road

The A331 was a number without a home for a long time.  Only light of day it saw was on an episode of Casualty during the 1990's while it was being built.

It starts officially at the A30 Meadows Roundabout although it only goes "green" south of the M3; this part was originally built during the 1980's as a link from Camberley to the M3 as a single carriageway which was upgraded pretty quickly.  This led to Sainsbury's and Watchmoor Park Industrial Estate being built on the route.

South of the M3, the fun starts. After the roundabout and slip off for Frimley (which has been signalised and the lanes redesigned many times) it becomes a fast alternative to the original A325 which goes through Farnborough, Aldershot and Farnham. Under the main London Railway line comes a limited junction for Mychett and Farnborough Park. Can only get off this side and get on the other side going north.

It winds its way through more of the Surrey and Hampshire countryside. The next exit is North Camp which is the main exit for Aldershot Military Town and the towns of Ash and Ash Vale. This has a unique flyover for the A3011 as it tilts!

Continuing on towards the end and the A31 not a lot happens. Nearing to the Aldershot turn off comes the Basingstoke Canal and instead of going under the road, it goes OVER it. The Aldershot turn off is the main one into the town and the football ground. Coming the other way, its signed for Woking (A324) but it is the A323.

Less than a mile later it terminates onto the A31 with a roundabout (again, poorly lined) directing either east to Guildford or west to Farnham and Alton. This is where it ends. However, with the Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 now being built, it could be extended down to it to make a continuous route from the M3 to Portsmouth.
