A38 About the Road The UK's second longest road, beaten only by the colossal A1, the A38 has always played an important role, linking the south west, the Midlands and Yorkshire (even though it doesn't quite get that far!) Much of this road has now lost some of its importance; the parallel M5 takes away the vast majority of traffic between Birmingham and Exeter, whilst the M42 and A42 remove much of the East to West Midlands flow. However, it has still seen some big improvements - its extension from Litchfield to Mansfield is a bit of a patchwork quilt of bypasses and thrown-in-upgrades - with a bit of a sharp turn thrown in for good measure! There's also the vastly important Devon section, carrying much of the holiday traffic down to Cornwall and the Devon resorts. Plus that weird bit of motorway, the A38(M) Aston Expressway, that has no central reservation and uses tidal flow!!!
