A40

About the Road

The A40 is the historic trunk route from London to South Wales, as it was the only suitable road route between the two until the M4 was built. However, the M4 now takes the majority of the long distance traffic, and the M40 takes over the role of taking traffic up to Oxford. Even before the M4 was built, the main trunk route was via the A48 between Gloucester and Carmarthen, principally because the A48 went via Newport, Cardiff and Swansea, whereas the A40 took a straighter route over the rural landscape of Mid Wales.
