A470

About the Road

This is the main north-south cross-country route linking the North Wales coast with the Welsh capital. It is a major connective route, and due to it's length and route across the centre of Wales, it is often referred to as "the Spine of Wales". The road passes through two country parks, Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, and passes through a large part of Wales's mountainous terrain.

Originally, the A470 only ran from Cardiff to Brecon, but was extended during the 1970s or 1980s to form a single-numbered route across the country, taking over parts of the A438, A4073, A479, A44, A492, A489, A4084, A458, A487, A4018 and A496.
