A50

About the Road

The A50 was built as the main route from the north west to the East Midlands, and provides a free alternative to the congested M6 around Birmingham. The section between Stoke and Derby was meant to be built as the M64 motorway, but that plan was shelved in favour of the lower quality A50 route. This has resulted in the A50 being rerouted away from its old course through Burton-upon-Trent (now the A511), and creating an 11 mile gap where it shares its route with the M1.

The road formerly ran south of Leicester to Hockcliffe via Northampton, and formed part of the main London to Leicester route, however the A6, and later M1, took over this role and subsequently, the road has been downgraded and renumbered to deter through traffic from using it as an alternative to the M1.
