A5117 About the Road Once a very important and strategic route into North Wales, the A5117 linked the A56 with the Welsh Road, meaning traffic to and from Wales could pass over the top of Chester. Its primary job was made redundant when the M56 was built, although a short section still does this as the M56 stops short of the Welsh Road. However, this should change with the current improvement works being undertaken by the Highways Agency between the M56 terminus and the A550. Signs of its original importance do still remain along the section between the M56 J14 and the A41 in the form of a stretch of dual carriageway and a very wide single carriageway road - in fact, if you look carefully enough, you can still see signs of a third "suicide" overtaking lane down the middle of the road.
